A van conversion is a huge investment whether it be for everyday use or as a holiday home; and just like us humans they need a little TLC from time to time! Whether you’re a fair weather camper or choose to embrace van life full time, these handy tips will help you keep your van conversion at its best!
And remember; before you embark on a road trip you should always check the following:
Tyres, Brakes, Oil, Adblue, Coolant, Washer fluid, Lights, and Air filters.
Stay mould free
Not only is it hazardous to health, if left unaddressed mould and mildew can cause a real headache for campervan owners.
Mould thrives in warm, humid environments and can be a result of leaks, condensation and spills to name a few - ensure your van is well ventilated by opening windows and doors when possible.
When your van is not in use, make sure all windows, doors and latches are properly secured to avoid any moisture making its way in! If you are using your van regularly it’s not such a problem but if the van is not used for long periods of time make sure you check on it and give it an air out from time to time.
Drain your pipes
If your camper is going to sit for an extended period of time (especially over winter), it is important to drain any pipes and remove gas bottles or residual gas if external tank is fitted.
Cold weather can cause any remaining water to freeze and split the pipes, it is important to drain the pipes and fully open all taps to ensure you’re not left with an expensive bill after your camper’s winter break!
Keep it clean
The Great British weather can change at the drop of a hat, ranging from glorious sunshine to driving rain and gale-force winds all in the space of a few hours – making keeping your van clean a laborious task.
Over time, built up dirt and debris can cause permanent damage and deterioration to your van including rust, peeling paint and stains. If you’re keeping your van outside, consider investing in a cover to prevent exposure to UV rays, moisture and bird droppings. Bird droppings can cause real damage to paintwork if they’re not cleaned, make sure that you clean it off as soon as you can, and check that roof!! It’s easy to miss a soiled roof, but left un-cleaned bird droppings will corrode the lacquer and the paint surface will begin to degrade.
Love your pop top
Additional head clearance and an extra bed are a luxury many van owners can’t be without!
It is essential to allow your roof time to dry after heavy rain, as prolonged exposure to water will cause damage to the canvas. If the roof is down during the wet weather – pop the top to allow it to dry out, just as you would with a tent!
Just like us – pop tops need some TLC every now and again too! Use clean water and a soft-bristle brush to avoid dirt and grime building up in the folds of your roof. Ensure that the rubber seal running around your roof is intact. If the rubber seal starts to come apart water may collect under your roof (even when it’s down!) and cause serious damage to the canvas.

When pulling your roof down, ensure all windows and doors are wide open so any air trapped inside can escape. Although a common and easy-to-make mistake, failure to do so can result in the canvas bellowing out and becoming caught in the hinge, causing it to tear
Gas safety
Gas Safe checks should be carried out annually to ensure the integrity of you supply.
Most Conversions are passed to static caravan regulations but if you shop around you will find some converters that work to full Gas Safety Regulations and will supply you with a full gas safe certification ensuring that extra peace of mind that it has been fitted correctly. This is especially important as LPG is such a volatile substance and the upmost care should always be taken while using it and how it has been fitted.
If you suspect you have a gas leak NEVER use a naked flame to investigate! Cover the entire valve and hose with a solution of washing up liquid and water, if there is a breach in your gas supply, bubbles will appear at the source of the leak!
Remember to ensure all flammable gas containers are stored upright and disconnected when not in use, and make sure you’re carrying the appropriate fire safety equipment on board at all times.
